CIBC Interview Intelligence

Questions built for your role at CIBC, each with a guide to structuring the answer against your own experience.

Most candidates who receive CIBC's Capital Markets take-home case know it is demanding. Fewer know the two-stage presentation, not the analysis itself, is where most people are eliminated.

CIBC World Markets gives Capital Markets candidates a 48-hour take-home case, then two separate presentation sessions: one to junior analysts testing the approach, a second to a Director and Executive Managing Director who challenge the conclusions live. A technically sound case that cannot be defended under real scrutiny is reported to score worse than a simpler one that can.

02 / Hiring process

Four stages, and one of them decides it

4 stages from application to offer. The assessment stage is reported to be the one that decides it.

4stages

01

Application through Workday CV in Word or PDF

CIBC's own five step process names this the second stage after exploring careers. The system generates a requisition number, and CIBC recommends contacting recruitment with that number if status hasn't changed after 30 days. Bilingual roles add a French language proficiency test at the assessment stage.

02

The assessment stage video, skills test, or case, by role

CIBC calls this 'Unleash your skills' and it varies meaningfully by role: a pre-recorded video interview is the most common format, but it can include an Excel or Office skills test, a coding challenge for technology roles, a whiteboarding exercise, or a role specific simulation. CIBC states explicitly that video assessment responses are reviewed by human recruiters, not automated AI. Retail roles are reported to see three to four behavioural questions with thirty seconds to prepare and roughly two minutes to answer each.

03

Interview with the team format varies by role category

Professional and retail roles are reported to run an HR phone screen first, then a technical and behavioural interview over Microsoft Teams with screen sharing for technology roles. Capital Markets analyst candidates instead receive a 48 hour take-home case, followed by two separate presentation sessions: one to junior analysts on the analytical approach, a second to a Director and Executive Managing Director who challenge the conclusions directly.

04

Background check and decision make your decision

CIBC's own process names this the final of its five stages. Capital Markets and wealth advisory roles are reported to carry additional licensing or registration steps before a start date is confirmed.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

01 Why do you want to work at CIBC? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Often asked directly on the pre-recorded video assessment, which every role sits through. A generic answer about stability reads identically to a human reviewer as it would for any other Big Five bank.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific. A career area, a stated value, or something from CIBC's own recent results.
  • Connect it to your history. Why that particular thing matters given what you've actually done.
  • Say what you want from the role. What you hope to build or learn, stated plainly.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, checkable fact about CIBC tied to something real about your own background.

What weakens it

It's one of the Big Five banks with good stability and benefits. True of any of the other four.

02 Tell me about a time you understood a client's real need, even though it wasn't exactly what they first asked for. Client focus Open guide

Find your angle. CIBC's own career language frames every role around identifying client ambitions, not processing requests, and this tests whether that's a real skill or a slogan.

Build your answer

  • Name what they initially asked for. Briefly, without judgement.
  • Show how you found the real need. The specific question or observation that revealed it.
  • State what you did differently as a result. Not what you would have done in theory.

Bring the evidence

A specific instance of uncovering a real need behind an initial request, and a concrete action taken as a result.

What weakens it

I always listen carefully to what clients ask for and try to help.

05 / The three values

What is actually being scored

CIBC's employer brand is built around 'bring your ambitions to life'. Bring a story that shows a real ambition you pursued, not a general answer about wanting a stable banking career.

3stories

Client relationships over transactions

CIBC's own career area language frames roles around deepening client relationships and understanding client ambitions, not processing volume. A time you understood what a client or user actually needed, beyond what they first asked for.

Inclusion and diverse experience

CIBC's own material states that varied experiences and styles are what it values. A time a different perspective, yours or someone else's, changed an outcome.

Growth within the bank

CIBC frames careers around helping ambitions flourish over time, not a single role. A time you built a skill deliberately with support from someone more senior.

06 / Before you apply

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

  • The assessment answers that read as dishonest rather than confident
  • What the availability question is really deciding
  • The application detail that cannot be edited once submitted
