Deloitte Interview Intelligence

Questions built for your practice at Deloitte, each with a guide to structuring the answer against your own experience.

The final round is reported to include a group case with five distinct, timed stages: assigned into a group of three to six, ten minutes to read the case alone, twenty minutes of group discussion while interviewers watch, then twenty minutes of individual questioning.

That structure sits alongside a separate thirty to forty five minute one on one case and a thirty to forty five minute behavioural interview in the same final round, reported to be run by more senior staff with a heavier weight on cultural fit and coachability than the first round screener.

02 / Hiring process

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. Application and psychometric assessment is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Application and psychometric assessment before any human contact

An online application paired with a psychometric assessment, reported to run before a recruiter is involved for most practices.

02

Preliminary screening recruiter

A screening conversation confirming background and basic fit ahead of the case rounds.

03

First round case structured and quantitative

Reported to be primarily a screener: interviewers check that you can actually work through a case and show the potential to do this as real work, with the case itself more structured and numbers heavy than the final round's.

04

Final round behavioural, case, and a group case

Reported to run three parts with more senior interviewers: a thirty to forty five minute behavioural interview, a thirty to forty five minute one on one case, and a group case where a group of three to six candidates gets ten minutes to read the case alone, twenty minutes to discuss it while interviewers observe, then twenty minutes of individual questioning.

05

Partner interview and decision career fit, then an offer

A shorter, more conversational round with a partner focused on career fit, reported to still factor into the final decision rather than being a formality after everything else is settled.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Interview question practice library

The assessment, the case rounds and the four values apply across every practice, so the core set below covers that ground. Each practice then adds the technical depth specific to it.

01 Why Deloitte, and why this practice specifically? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Opens the preliminary screen. A generic answer about Big Four prestige says nothing about fit for the specific practice applied to.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific about the practice. A service line or a real piece of work, not the firm in general.
  • Connect it to your own background. Why this specific area suits what you've actually done.
  • Say what you want to build here. A concrete skill or path, stated plainly.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, checkable fact about the specific practice tied to something real about your own background.

What weakens it

Deloitte is a globally respected firm with strong career growth.

02 A retail client's regional stores are underperforming the national average. Where do you start? Case structuring Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real case structuring under the candidate led format the first round screener is reported to run.

Build your answer

  • Ask one clarifying question before structuring anything. About the business, not a generic industry question.
  • Propose your own structure aloud. State it as your framework, don't wait to be handed one.
  • Ask for the specific data your structure needs next. Not a general request for more information.

Bring the evidence

A specific clarifying question asked first, a self proposed structure, and a targeted data request driven by that structure.

What weakens it

I'd ask what data is available so I can look into the underperformance.

03 Tell me about a time you protected someone's trust in you even when a smaller, easier version of the truth was available. Integrity Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to Serve with Integrity. Tests whether the easier, softer version was genuinely available and declined, not just that honesty happened.

Build your answer

  • State the easier version honestly. What you could have said instead, specifically.
  • Describe what you actually said. The harder, more complete truth.
  • Say what it cost you, if anything. Real, not a tidy moral with no downside.

Bring the evidence

A genuinely available easier alternative, the actual harder truth delivered, and an honest account of any real cost.

What weakens it

I always try to be honest even when it's difficult.

Find your angle. Maps to Outstanding Value. Tests a real instance of exceeding scope, not a general claim of high standards.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual ask. So the extra is visible against it.
  • Describe the specific additional thing you delivered. Concrete, not vague.
  • Say why it mattered to them specifically. Not just that it felt thorough.

Bring the evidence

A clear baseline ask, a specific additional deliverable, and a stated reason it mattered to the recipient.

What weakens it

I always try to go above and beyond what's asked.

Build your answer

  • Name what the colleague actually needed. Specific, beyond the immediate task.
  • Describe the concrete thing you did. Not just being supportive in general.
  • Say what happened for them. A real outcome, not your own feeling about helping.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named need beyond the task, a concrete supportive action, and a real outcome for the colleague.

What weakens it

Saying you always look out for the team, with no particular colleague, moment or outcome behind it.

06 Describe a time a genuinely different perspective changed a real decision, not just made a meeting feel more inclusive. Cultural Diversity Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to Strength from Cultural Diversity. Tests for an actual changed outcome, not a perspective simply being acknowledged.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual different perspective. Specific, not vague.
  • Say what it changed about the decision. Concretely, not just that it was heard.
  • State how you know the change was real. Not just a polite nod in the room.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named different perspective, a concrete change to the actual decision, and evidence the change was real rather than symbolic.

What weakens it

I always make sure different viewpoints are considered on my team.

07 How would you estimate the number of hospitals in a mid sized US city, and why would a consultant be asked this? Case reasoning Open guide

Find your angle. Tests structured estimation reasoning and, separately, whether the candidate understands what the question is actually screening for.

Build your answer

  • State your estimation approach aloud. Population divided by a reasonable beds-per-capita figure, stated as an assumption.
  • Sanity check the number against something real. A comparison point, not just accepting the math.
  • Name what the question is actually testing. Comfort with ambiguity and structured reasoning, not the exact right number.

Bring the evidence

A stated estimation method with an explicit assumption, a sanity check against a real reference point, and a correct read on what the question is actually assessing.

What weakens it

I'd look up the population and estimate based on average city sizes.

08 In a group case exercise, how would you handle a group member who is dominating the discussion? Group dynamics Open guide

Find your angle. Directly relevant to the reported group case round. Tests real facilitation instinct, not passive tolerance or open confrontation.

Build your answer

  • Redirect rather than confront. A specific technique, not calling them out directly.
  • Create space for quieter members. A concrete move, not a general hope others will speak up.
  • Stay focused on the group's output. Not on managing personalities for their own sake.

Bring the evidence

A specific redirection technique rather than confrontation, a concrete way of creating space for others, and a stated focus on the group's actual output.

What weakens it

I'd politely ask them to let other people share their thoughts too.

Build your answer

  • State the actual answer and the pushback. Specific, not vague.
  • Describe how you responded to the real objection. With reasoning, not repeating the answer louder.
  • Say what happened. Honestly, whether you held the position or updated it.

Bring the evidence

A specific answer and the real pushback it received, a reasoned response to the actual objection, and an honest account of the outcome.

What weakens it

I laid out my logic and the pushback settled once they heard it.

Build your answer

  • State the mistake plainly. No minimizing.
  • Say who you told and when. Proactively, before discovery.
  • Describe the fix and the prevention. Two distinct things.

Bring the evidence

A plainly stated mistake, proactive disclosure before discovery, and a distinct prevention step.

What weakens it

I caught it and corrected it before it became a real problem.

  • State the feedback plainly. Without softening it.
  • Describe your honest reaction. Even if it stung.
  • Say what you changed. A concrete change, not stated intent.

Bring the evidence

Plainly stated feedback, an honest reaction, and a concrete change afterward.

Find your angle. A basic operational reality of consulting life. Tests a real criterion, not just working harder.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual criterion. A hard external deadline versus internal flexibility.
  • Describe how you communicated the tradeoff. To both parties, not decided silently.
  • Give a real example. Concrete, not hypothetical.

Bring the evidence

A ranking rule based on real deadline pressure, evidence the tradeoff was communicated to both sides, and one concrete instance it was applied.

What weakens it

I stay organized and manage my time so everything gets done.

13 Tell me about a time you had to get up to speed on an unfamiliar industry very quickly for a client. Learning Open guide

Find your angle. A real and common consulting scenario. Tests a targeted method, not general enthusiasm for learning.

Build your answer

  • Name the gap and the actual deadline. Specific and tight.
  • Describe the highest leverage shortcut you used. Not broad reading.
  • Say how you confirmed you were ready. A real check before a client call.

Bring the evidence

The precise knowledge gap and its real deadline, one targeted way of closing it fast, and a genuine test before relying on it.

What weakens it

I did some research and picked it up quickly since I'm a fast learner.

Build your answer

  • State the actual disagreement. Specific, not vague.
  • Describe how you raised it. Directly, with reasoning, not behind their back.
  • Say what happened. Honestly, whether it changed or you carried it out anyway.

Bring the evidence

A concrete description of what was actually being disagreed on, a direct conversation rather than a workaround, and an honest account of what followed.

What weakens it

I raised my concerns respectfully and then supported the decision.

15 A client wants to migrate their financial close process onto a new cloud ERP. What do you need to know before recommending an approach? System design Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real enterprise implementation judgment, not a generic technology migration answer.

Build your answer

  • Ask about the actual current process, not just the target system. What's broken versus what's just old.
  • Address data migration and reconciliation explicitly. The riskiest part of any close process migration.
  • Name a phased rollout over a single cutover. Given the real risk of a broken close process.

Bring the evidence

A question about the current process rather than just the target system, explicit attention to data reconciliation risk, and a phased rather than single-cutover recommendation.

What weakens it

I'd assess their current systems and design an integration plan for the new ERP.

16 What would you do if a client's IT team pushed back on a technical recommendation you were confident in? Client management Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real collaborative judgment, not either capitulating or dismissing the client's own team.

Build your answer

  • Understand their actual concern. It may reflect real context you don't have, not just resistance.
  • Respond with evidence, not authority. Not simply repeat the recommendation as the expert view.
  • Adjust if the concern is legitimate. Rather than holding the recommendation purely to avoid looking wrong.

Bring the evidence

A genuine effort to understand the concern, an evidence based rather than authority based response, and willingness to adjust if the concern holds up.

What weakens it

I'd explain my reasoning and reassure them the approach is sound.

Find your angle. Tests real engineering judgment on client work specifically, where the tradeoff has a real commercial dimension too.

Build your answer

  • State the actual tradeoff honestly. What the simpler fix gave up, specifically.
  • Explain the real reason the timing mattered. A client deadline, not just convenience.
  • Say what happened to the gap afterward. Addressed later, or knowingly accepted.

Bring the evidence

An honestly named tradeoff, real reasoning for the timing, and a stated follow up on the gap.

What weakens it

I try to balance speed and thoroughness on most technical decisions.

18 How would you approach troubleshooting a client's system integration that's failing intermittently? Debugging Open guide

Find your angle. Tests systematic diagnosis on a client engagement, where visibility into the system is often more limited than an internal role.

Build your answer

  • Establish the real pattern first. When it fails versus when it doesn't, not guessing from one instance.
  • Check for a data or volume specific trigger. Intermittent failures are rarely truly random.
  • Communicate uncertainty honestly to the client while investigating. Rather than promising a fix before you have one.

Bring the evidence

An established real failure pattern, a check for a specific trigger rather than assuming randomness, and honest client communication about the state of the investigation.

What weakens it

I'd check the logs around the failures and try to identify the cause.

19 What would you do if a client kept adding requests beyond the original project scope? Scope management Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real scope discipline, a common and genuinely difficult client management situation.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual scope creep plainly to the client. Not absorb it silently to avoid conflict.
  • Distinguish a genuinely small ask from a real expansion. Not treat every request identically.
  • Propose a real path for the larger asks. A change order or a future phase, not just a refusal.

Bring the evidence

A plain naming of the scope issue rather than silent absorption, a real distinction between minor and major requests, and a concrete path offered for the larger ones.

What weakens it

I'd try to accommodate reasonable requests while managing the timeline.

Build your answer

  • State what went wrong, plainly. No softening language.
  • Describe how you addressed it with the client directly. Not just an internal fix.
  • Say what you'd do differently next time. A real change to your judgment, not a general lesson.

Bring the evidence

A plainly stated failure, direct client-facing accountability, and a real change to future judgment.

What weakens it

I identified the issue quickly and worked with the team to correct it.

21 A client asks how long a system integration project should take before you've done any real scoping. What do you say? Estimation Open guide

Find your angle. Tests honest handling of premature estimation pressure, a common real situation in client-facing technology work.

Build your answer

  • Give a real range grounded in comparable work. Not a single confident number pulled from nowhere.
  • State plainly what the range depends on. The specific unknowns that would narrow it.
  • Commit to a firmer number once scoping happens. Not leave it open ended forever.

Bring the evidence

A range grounded in real comparable experience, explicitly named unknowns the range depends on, and a commitment to a firmer number after scoping.

What weakens it

I'd give them a rough estimate based on similar projects I've seen.

22 How would you approach testing a client's revenue recognition under a new accounting standard? Technical judgment Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real audit judgment under a genuine complication, not a standard testing checklist recited from memory.

Build your answer

  • Understand how the client actually applied the new standard. Before testing anything, since implementation varies.
  • Identify the specific judgment points the standard introduces. Where a client's own estimate could be wrong or aggressive.
  • Design a test targeted at that specific judgment. Not a generic sample of transactions.

Bring the evidence

An understanding of the client's actual implementation approach, a specifically identified judgment point in the new standard, and a targeted test aimed at it.

What weakens it

I'd review their revenue recognition policy and test a sample of transactions.

  • Escalate immediately through the proper channel. The engagement partner, specifically.

  • Sequence the rest of your work around the gap. Rather than stalling entirely.
  • Communicate the real risk to the deadline internally. Not assume it will resolve itself in time.

Bring the evidence

A direct escalation with a concrete deadline given to the client, sequencing of unaffected work, and honest internal communication of the deadline risk.

What weakens it

I'd follow up with the client and keep working on what I can in the meantime.

27 How would you explain materiality to a client who thinks a small error shouldn't matter? Materiality Open guide

Find your angle. A basic technical screen for the domain. Tests precision and a real translation, not the definition repeated more slowly.

Build your answer

  • Define materiality precisely. The threshold at which an error would influence a user's decision.
  • Explain it's contextual, not a fixed percentage. A small amount can matter if it flips a result.
  • Give a plain example specific to their situation. Not the technical definition restated.

Bring the evidence

A precise definition, an acknowledgement that materiality is contextual, and a plain example specific to the client's own numbers.

What weakens it

  • Research the actual authority available. Regulations or rulings specific to this ambiguity.
  • Assess the realistic risk honestly. Not optimistically.

Immediate reporting, an honest materiality assessment, and honest client communication.

  • Describe what you didn't compromise on. The check you kept despite the pressure.
  • Say what you streamlined instead. An honest tradeoff.

34 Walk me through how you'd investigate a potential control failure flagged during a client engagement. Investigation Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether the trace follows a real pattern rather than settling on the first plausible cause.

Build your answer

  • Confirm what the control was actually designed to prevent. Before assuming it failed versus was never adequate.
  • Trace whether it's a one time lapse or a design gap. Very different findings and remediation.
  • Document the reasoning, not just the conclusion. So it can be reviewed later.

Bring the evidence

An explicit understanding of the control's intended purpose, a distinction between a lapse and a design gap, and documented reasoning.

What weakens it

  • Revisit the evidence, not the conclusion. Check the work again on its merits.
  • Hold the finding if the evidence still supports it. Communicated respectfully, but not softened.

  • Prioritize by real exposure, not order received. The financial or reputational stakes.
  • Communicate what's deferred transparently. Rather than a rushed shallow review on everything.

38 What would you do if a client's own risk model produced a result that seemed implausible? Model risk Open guide

Build your answer

  • Check the underlying data quality first. Rule out a data error before doubting the model's logic.
  • Assess if it's a genuine edge case the model wasn't built for. Named specifically.
  • Escalate rather than quietly override. A model output disagreement needs a documented process.

Bring the evidence

An explicit data quality check first, identification of a specific edge case, and evidence of escalating rather than a quiet override.

What weakens it

39 How would you handle discovering a risk issue that's outside the scope of your current engagement? Scope Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real judgment on a genuine boundary situation, since a real risk can't simply be ignored on a technicality.

Build your answer

  • Raise it regardless of scope. A real risk finding doesn't wait for the right engagement to exist.
  • Be explicit about the scope boundary. So it's clear this wasn't part of the original work.
  • Let the client decide how to address it. Not assume it becomes your team's problem to fix.

Bring the evidence

A finding raised regardless of scope, an explicit statement of the scope boundary, and respect for the client's own decision on how to address it.

What weakens it

I'd mention it informally so they're aware, without making it a formal issue.

  • Describe the structure you imposed. Your own framework, named specifically.
  • Say how it changed the outcome. Concretely, not just that it felt more organized.

  • Respond to that specific concern with evidence. Not a general defense.

  • Communicate the change transparently. To the team and client.

  • State the cutting criterion. Whether a slide changes that decision, not whether it's interesting.

  • Assess what's actually missing and why it matters. Specific, not a vague caveat.
  • Decide what can be reasonably estimated versus not. With the assumption stated explicitly.
  • Flag the limitation in the final recommendation. Rather than presenting it as fully solid.

Bring the evidence

Stories screened from everything published about this employer, chosen because they can be used in the room rather than because they are recent.

  • Each one carries a line on how to use it in the answer
  • Crime, recalls, litigation and share price moves are excluded outright

05 / The four values

What is actually being scored

Deloitte publishes four shared values in this exact language. Bring one real story for each rather than a general answer about wanting to work at a Big Four firm.

4stories

Serve with Integrity

A time you protected someone's trust in you even when a smaller, easier version of the truth was available.

Outstanding Value

A time you delivered a result a client or stakeholder didn't expect, not just what was asked for.

Commitment to Each Other

A time you looked out for a colleague's development or wellbeing, not just the task in front of you both.

Strength from Cultural Diversity

A time a genuinely different perspective changed a real decision, not just made a meeting feel more inclusive.

06 / Before you apply

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

  • The assessment answers that read as dishonest rather than confident
  • What the availability question is really deciding
  • The application detail that cannot be edited once submitted

! Four ways this goes wrong before anyone meets you

The group case is not a discussion warm up

It is reported to be scored across three distinct, timed phases on its own, on top of the individual case and the behavioural round in the same final day. Treating it as informal because it's a group activity is a common and costly misread.

The first round case and the final round case are reported to test different things

The first is reported to be a more structured, quantitative screener checking baseline capability. The final round is reported to weigh cultural fit and coachability more heavily, with more senior interviewers in the room.

Commercial and GPS are genuinely separate tracks

Deloitte's own site splits its listings between Commercial and Government and Public Services from the first search. A candidate researching only the commercial practice can walk into a GPS interview unprepared for the clearance and compliance realities specific to that client base.

Finance Managed Services is a real, sizeable practice, not a footnote

A live sample showed the same controllership and record to report role posted separately across five different industry verticals. Candidates expecting a single generic finance interview are reported to be caught off guard by how industry specific the actual conversation gets.
