Kroger Interview Intelligence

The questions candidates report being asked for your role, each with a guide to finding the answer in your own experience.

Almost every applicant takes the same roughly 85 question personality and situational judgement test, except candidates for technology roles, who are reported to face a coding assessment instead.

The test is reported to run online immediately after the application, whether that application was submitted at home or at an in-store hiring kiosk, and to score professionalism, teamwork and coping under pressure before a human is involved.

02 / Hiring process

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. Online assessment is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Application online or in-store kiosk, ~20 minutes

Candidates are reported to apply either online at home or at a hiring kiosk inside a store, entering education and employment history. Which channel you use is not reported to change what happens next.

02

Online assessment before any human contact

Most candidates are reported to take an online test of roughly 85 questions immediately after applying, combining a personality section and a situational judgement section built around real customer scenarios. Technology and engineering candidates are reported to instead complete a coding assessment at this stage.

03

Phone screen brief

A short call confirming basic fit and availability for candidates who clear the assessment, deciding whether you move to a face to face interview.

04

Face to face interview with the hiring team

A more in depth conversation with one or more members of the hiring team, reported to go deeper into behavioural and role specific questions than the phone screen.

05

Background check and decision drug test or physical for some roles

A background check, and for some roles a drug test or physical, is reported to follow the interview before a formal offer. Requirements are reported to vary by role.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Every role sits behind the same application and online assessment, so the core set below applies whatever you applied for. Each specialist role then adds the rounds specific to it.

01 Why do you want to work at Kroger? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Opens the phone screen for most roles. A generic answer about liking groceries or the store says nothing specific about you.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific. A particular banner, a program, or something real, not the company in general.
  • Connect it to your own history. Why that particular thing matters given what you've actually done.
  • Say what you want from the role. What you hope to build or learn, stated plainly.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, checkable fact about Kroger or the specific banner tied to something real about your own background.

What weakens it

Kroger is a big, stable company with a lot of stores near me.

02 How would you handle a customer who is upset about a price discrepancy at checkout? Customer service Open guide

Find your angle. A daily occurrence at scale. Tests acknowledgement before explanation, and a real path to resolution.

Build your answer

  • Acknowledge the frustration first. Before checking anything or explaining the shelf tag.
  • Verify the actual price quickly. A real check, not a guess or a dismissal.
  • Resolve it plainly. Honor the lower price if it's a real error, or explain clearly if it isn't.

Bring the evidence

An acknowledgement before verification, a real price check rather than a guess, and a plain, honest resolution either way.

What weakens it

I'd apologize and explain that the system price is what we have to charge.

05 / The three values

What is actually being scored

Kroger publishes six values in three paired names. Bring a story that matches each pair, not a general answer about liking grocery work.

3stories

Honesty and Integrity

A time you told the truth about a mistake when a smaller, easier version of events was available to you.

Diversity and Inclusion

A time you made sure someone different from you actually felt welcome, not just tolerated, on your team.

Safety and Respect

A time you protected someone's safety or dignity when it would have been easier to look past it.

06 / Before you apply

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

  • The assessment answers that read as dishonest rather than confident
  • What the availability question is really deciding
  • The application detail that cannot be edited once submitted
