Kroger Interview Intelligence

The questions candidates report being asked for your role, each with a guide to finding the answer in your own experience.

Almost every applicant takes the same roughly 85 question personality and situational judgement test, except candidates for technology roles, who are reported to face a coding assessment instead.

The test is reported to run online immediately after the application, whether that application was submitted at home or at an in-store hiring kiosk, and to score professionalism, teamwork and coping under pressure before a human is involved.

02 / Hiring process

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. Online assessment is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Application online or in-store kiosk, ~20 minutes

Candidates are reported to apply either online at home or at a hiring kiosk inside a store, entering education and employment history. Which channel you use is not reported to change what happens next.

02

Online assessment before any human contact

Most candidates are reported to take an online test of roughly 85 questions immediately after applying, combining a personality section and a situational judgement section built around real customer scenarios. Technology and engineering candidates are reported to instead complete a coding assessment at this stage.

03

Phone screen brief

A short call confirming basic fit and availability for candidates who clear the assessment, deciding whether you move to a face to face interview.

04

Face to face interview with the hiring team

A more in depth conversation with one or more members of the hiring team, reported to go deeper into behavioural and role specific questions than the phone screen.

05

Background check and decision drug test or physical for some roles

A background check, and for some roles a drug test or physical, is reported to follow the interview before a formal offer. Requirements are reported to vary by role.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Every role sits behind the same application and online assessment, so the core set below applies whatever you applied for. Each specialist role then adds the rounds specific to it.

01 Why do you want to work at Kroger? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Opens the phone screen for most roles. A generic answer about liking groceries or the store says nothing specific about you.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific. A particular banner, a program, or something real, not the company in general.
  • Connect it to your own history. Why that particular thing matters given what you've actually done.
  • Say what you want from the role. What you hope to build or learn, stated plainly.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, checkable fact about Kroger or the specific banner tied to something real about your own background.

What weakens it

Kroger is a big, stable company with a lot of stores near me.

02 How would you handle a customer who is upset about a price discrepancy at checkout? Customer service Open guide

Find your angle. A daily occurrence at scale. Tests acknowledgement before explanation, and a real path to resolution.

Build your answer

  • Acknowledge the frustration first. Before checking anything or explaining the shelf tag.
  • Verify the actual price quickly. A real check, not a guess or a dismissal.
  • Resolve it plainly. Honor the lower price if it's a real error, or explain clearly if it isn't.

Bring the evidence

An acknowledgement before verification, a real price check rather than a guess, and a plain, honest resolution either way.

What weakens it

I'd apologize and explain that the system price is what we have to charge.

03 What would you do if a coworker asked you to clock them in before they arrived? Integrity Open guide

Find your angle. Maps directly to the honesty and integrity value. Tests whether workplace friendship overrides a clear rule.

Build your answer

  • Say no plainly. Stated first, without a long justification.
  • Explain the real reason briefly. Not just that it's against policy.
  • Address the friendship without punishing it. You can decline the favor without treating them as a suspect.

Bring the evidence

A plain refusal stated first, a real reason beyond citing policy, and a way of declining that doesn't damage the relationship unnecessarily.

What weakens it

I'd probably help them out since it's a small thing between friends.

04 Tell me about a time you made sure someone different from you actually felt welcome on your team. Inclusion Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to the diversity and inclusion value. Tests a real, active step, not a general claim of being welcoming.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual difference. Specific, not vague.
  • Describe the concrete thing you did. An active step, not just being friendly.
  • Say how you knew it actually landed. A real sign, not your own assumption.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named difference, a concrete active step, and a real sign the effort actually landed.

What weakens it

I always try to be welcoming to everyone regardless of background.

Find your angle. Maps to the safety and respect value. Tests whether the harder, right action actually happened, not just good intentions.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual situation. Specific, not vague.
  • Say what you did, plainly. The real action, even if it was uncomfortable.
  • State the outcome honestly. Including if it created friction.

Bring the evidence

A specific real situation, a plainly described action even if uncomfortable, and an honest account of the outcome.

What weakens it

I always try to look out for people and speak up when something feels wrong.

06 How would you handle a long line with only one register open? Prioritization Open guide

Find your angle. A common real scenario at scale. Tests real triage, not just working faster.

Build your answer

  • Signal for backup immediately. Rather than trying to power through alone first.
  • Acknowledge the line, not just the person you're serving. So people waiting don't feel invisible.
  • Keep serving accurately. Speed shouldn't come at the cost of scanning errors.

Bring the evidence

An immediate call for backup, acknowledgement of the waiting line, and maintained accuracy despite the pressure to rush.

What weakens it

I'd work as fast as I can to get through the line quickly.

07 Tell me about a time you told the truth about a mistake you could have hidden. Ownership Open guide

Find your angle. Tests the disclose-first discipline directly, since a hidden version of events was genuinely available.

Build your answer

  • State the mistake plainly. No minimizing.
  • Say why hiding it was actually an option. So the honesty is a real choice, not the only path.
  • Describe what you did instead. Disclosed and fixed, proactively.

Bring the evidence

A plainly stated mistake, an honest acknowledgement that concealment was genuinely possible, and proactive disclosure and correction.

What weakens it

I made a mistake and made sure to fix it right away.

08 What would you do if you saw a coworker being disrespectful to a customer? Respect Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether loyalty to a coworker overrides the customer respect standard.

Build your answer

  • Address the moment first if it's happening live. Redirect the interaction, not just note it for later.
  • Talk to the coworker directly afterward. Rather than only reporting it upward.
  • Escalate if it continues. Since a pattern needs more than a peer conversation.

Bring the evidence

An in-the-moment redirection if the interaction is live, a direct follow-up conversation with the coworker, and escalation if the behavior repeats.

What weakens it

I'd mention it to a manager so they can address it.

09 Describe a time you had to learn a new task quickly during a busy shift. Adaptability Open guide

Find your angle. Tests a real fast-learning method under real pressure, not general enthusiasm for learning.

Build your answer

  • Name the task and the actual time pressure. Specific and tight.
  • Describe your real method. Asking a specific person or watching once closely, not general study.
  • Say how you checked before relying on it. A real check, not just confidence.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named task under real time pressure, a concrete learning method, and a genuine check before relying on the new skill.

What weakens it

I picked it up quickly since I'm good at learning new things on the fly.

10 Tell me about a time you disagreed with a store policy. Conflict Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether disagreement gets raised through the right channel or just ignored on the floor.

Build your answer

  • State the actual disagreement. Specific, not vague.
  • Say you followed it anyway. While raising the concern, not working around it.
  • Describe how you raised it. The actual channel used.

Bring the evidence

A specific disagreement, evidence of following the policy despite disagreeing, and a real channel used to raise the concern.

What weakens it

I found a way to work around it that still got the job done.

11 How do you stay reliable when your schedule changes week to week? Reliability Open guide

Find your angle. A real constraint of shift-based retail work. Tests a concrete personal system, not just a claim of being flexible.

Build your answer

  • Name your actual method. A specific habit, not a general attitude.
  • Address the real risk. What normally causes people to miss a shift with a changing schedule.
  • Give a real example. Concrete, not hypothetical.

Bring the evidence

A named concrete method, an honest acknowledgement of the real risk in changing schedules, and one real example.

What weakens it

I just make sure to stay on top of my schedule and show up on time.

12 Describe a time you had to calm down a frustrated customer. De-escalation Open guide

Find your angle. Tests the standard acknowledgement-before-explanation discipline in a live example.

Build your answer

  • Say what they were frustrated about, specifically. Enough detail that the example feels real.
  • Describe the first thing you said. Acknowledgement, not an explanation or excuse.
  • State how it actually ended. A concrete resolution, not just that they calmed down.

Bring the evidence

A specific trigger for the frustration, an opening move that acknowledges rather than explains, and a concrete resolution.

What weakens it

I stayed calm and professional until they calmed down too.

13 What would you do if you noticed expired product still on the shelf? Attention to detail Open guide

Find your angle. A real, recurring operational and safety issue. Tests whether it gets pulled immediately or just noted for later.

Build your answer

  • Pull it immediately. Rather than leaving it until a scheduled check.
  • Check for more of the same batch nearby. Not just the one item you happened to spot.
  • Report the pattern, not just the item. So the underlying rotation issue gets addressed.

Bring the evidence

Immediate removal rather than a delayed note, a check for related stock nearby, and a report of the pattern rather than just the single item.

What weakens it

I'd pull it and let someone know so it doesn't happen again.

14 Tell me about a mistake you made with a customer and how you fixed it. Ownership Open guide

Find your angle. Tests the standard disclose-fix-prevent sequence in a customer facing context.

Build your answer

  • State the mistake plainly. No minimizing.
  • Say what you did to fix it directly with the customer. Not just an internal correction.
  • Describe the prevention step. Distinct from the immediate fix.

Bring the evidence

A plainly stated mistake, a direct fix with the customer, and a distinct prevention step.

What weakens it

I corrected it quickly before it became a bigger issue.

15 How would you handle a prescription that looks like it might contain an error? Safety Open guide

Find your angle. Core pharmacy judgment. Tests whether a suspected error gets verified or filled to avoid delay.

Build your answer

  • Stop and verify before filling. Never dispense on an assumption it's probably fine.
  • Contact the prescriber directly. Rather than guessing at the intended dose.
  • Document the concern and the resolution. So the check is traceable, not just remembered.

Bring the evidence

A stop before filling, direct contact with the prescriber rather than a guess, and documentation of both the concern and its resolution.

What weakens it

I'd fill it carefully and flag it if something still seems off.

16 Tell me about a time you had to say no to a patient request. Boundaries Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether a real clinical or regulatory boundary holds up against a sympathetic request.

Build your answer

  • State what was requested and the real reason for the no. Specific, not just citing policy.
  • Deliver it with empathy but without bending it. Kindness and a held boundary aren't in conflict.
  • Offer what genuinely could help instead. Without promising something you can't deliver.

Bring the evidence

A specific request and a real underlying reason for declining, an empathetic but unbent delivery, and a genuine alternative offered.

What weakens it

I explained the rules and tried to be as understanding as possible.

17 Describe how you'd manage a backed up queue during flu season. Workflow Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real triage under a genuine seasonal volume spike, not just working harder.

Build your answer

  • Triage by clinical urgency, not arrival order. A time sensitive medication ahead of a routine refill.
  • Communicate real wait times honestly. Rather than a vague 'just a few more minutes'.
  • Protect accuracy despite the volume. Speed cannot come at the cost of a dispensing error.

Bring the evidence

Triage based on clinical urgency rather than arrival order, honest real-time wait communication, and protected accuracy despite volume pressure.

What weakens it

I'd work through the queue as quickly and efficiently as possible.

18 What would you do if a patient couldn't afford their medication? Access Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real problem solving within actual constraints, rather than either dismissing the concern or overpromising.

Build your answer

  • Acknowledge the real constraint honestly. Not brush past it to move to the next customer.
  • Check what legitimate options actually exist. Generic alternatives, manufacturer programs, or a prescriber conversation.
  • Involve the prescriber if a change is genuinely needed. Rather than deciding alone to substitute something.

Bring the evidence

An honest acknowledgement of the cost barrier, a genuine check of real available options, and prescriber involvement for any actual change.

What weakens it

I'd let them know about any discount programs we have available.

19 Tell me about a time you caught a potential drug interaction. Clinical judgment Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real vigilance and follow through, not just that the system flagged something.

Build your answer

  • Say what actually surfaced the interaction. A system flag you didn't dismiss, or something you noticed yourself.
  • Describe how you verified it. Rather than acting on the alert alone or ignoring it.
  • Say what happened as a result. The real resolution.

Bring the evidence

A specific trigger for the concern, a genuine verification step, and a real resolution.

What weakens it

The system flagged it and I made sure it was handled correctly.

20 How would you explain a complex dosing instruction to a patient with low health literacy? Communication Open guide

Find your angle. Tests real translation ability, since a misunderstood instruction here has real safety consequences.

Build your answer

  • Avoid clinical language entirely. Not simplified jargon, no jargon.
  • Use a concrete daily reference point. Tied to meals or a fixed daily routine, not the clock alone.
  • Have them repeat it back. The only real way to confirm it landed.

Bring the evidence

Language free of clinical jargon, a concrete daily reference point rather than an abstract schedule, and a teach-back confirmation.

What weakens it

I'd explain it slowly and clearly and ask if they have questions.

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

! Four ways this goes wrong before anyone meets you

The assessment is the real filter, not the interview

It runs before a recruiter is involved, is reported to be roughly 85 questions, and is reported to screen out candidates who never reach a phone screen at all. Treat it as the first real evaluation, not a formality before the real process starts.

Technology roles are evaluated completely differently

A coding assessment is reported to replace the personality test for engineering and IT candidates. Preparing for the standard situational judgement test if you applied to a technology role is reported to be effort spent on the wrong thing.

Kroger operates under many banner names

King Soopers, Fred Meyer, Dillons, Fry's, Smith's, Roundy's and others are all part of the same live listings and the same hiring process. A candidate researching only 'Kroger' by name can miss real, relevant news and context about the specific banner they applied to.

In-store kiosk applicants go through the identical process

Applying at a kiosk rather than online does not shorten or simplify the process. The same assessment and stages are reported to apply regardless of application channel.
