RBC Interview Intelligence

Questions built for your role at RBC, each with a guide to structuring the answer against your own experience.

Most candidates are reported to be eliminated at a recorded interview with no human on the other end: thirty seconds to prepare, then two to three minutes to answer, no retake.

Retail and commercial banking candidates are reported to face this HireVue round after an aptitude test and before ever speaking to a hiring manager. Capital markets candidates face the same recorded format earlier, then a very different real time process: a phone round with junior bankers, then a Superday of four to five back to back thirty minute sessions.

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. Aptitude test is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Online application resume and role fit

Every path starts here. Reported to decide which of the two very different processes below you enter: retail and commercial banking, or capital markets.

02

Aptitude test retail track, verbal and numerical, 3 day window

Reported for retail and commercial banking candidates specifically: verbal and numerical reasoning tests completed within a three day window. Capital markets candidates are reported to skip this and move straight to the recorded interview.

03

Recorded video interview 30 seconds to prepare, no retake

A HireVue style round with no interviewer present, reported across both tracks. Thirty seconds to read the question, then two to three minutes to record an answer, with no option to redo it. Most candidates are reported to be eliminated here.

04

Track specific interview hiring manager, or phone round and Superday

Retail and commercial banking candidates are reported to move to a final interview with the actual hiring manager. Capital markets candidates instead face a forty five to sixty minute phone round with two or three analysts and associates, then a Superday of four to five sequential thirty minute sessions with an MD, a director, a VP and an associate, each reported to mix technical and behavioural questions.

05

Decision background check, then offer

A background check follows a successful final round before a formal offer. Capital markets acceptance is reported to run roughly six to eight percent overall, and under five percent for candidates who reach the Superday itself.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Interview question practice library

The recorded interview and its five values apply whatever role you applied for, so the core set below covers that ground. Each specialist role, and each track, then adds the rounds and technical depth specific to it.

01 Why do you want to work at RBC? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Opens the recorded round for most candidates. A generic answer about wanting a stable career at a big bank says nothing specific about you.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific about RBC. A division, a market, or something concrete, not the brand in general.
  • Connect it to your own history. Why that particular thing matters given what you've actually done.
  • Say what you want to build here. Stated plainly, not a general career goal.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, checkable fact about RBC tied to something real about your own background.

What weakens it

RBC is one of the biggest banks in Canada with great long term stability.

02 Tell me about a time you chose the harder path because it led to a better outcome for the person you were serving. Client First Open guide

Find your angle. Maps directly to RBC's Client First value. Tests a real instance where the easier option for you was genuinely available and declined.

Build your answer

  • State what the easier option would have been. Specific, so the harder choice is visible against it.
  • Describe the actual harder path you took. Concrete, not a general attitude of caring.
  • Say what the outcome actually was for them. Not your own feeling about having done the right thing.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named easier alternative, a concrete harder action taken instead, and a real outcome for the other person.

What weakens it

I always try to put the client's needs ahead of my own convenience.

03 Describe a time you named your own specific contribution to a failure, rather than describing what went wrong more broadly. Accountability Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to Accountability. Tests specificity in self-attribution, since a vague admission that 'the team could have done better' is a common way to sound accountable without actually being it.

Build your answer

  • Name the failure plainly. What actually went wrong, without hedging.
  • State your own specific part in it. Not the team's part, or the situation's part.
  • Say what you changed because of it. A concrete behavior change, not a general lesson.

Bring the evidence

A plainly named failure, your own specific personal contribution named directly, and a concrete resulting change.

What weakens it

As a team we didn't communicate well enough and the project slipped.

04 Tell me about a time doing the right thing came at a real personal cost. Integrity Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to Integrity. Tests whether the cost was genuinely real, not a mild inconvenience dressed up as sacrifice.

Build your answer

  • State the actual cost honestly. Specific, not softened into something trivial.
  • Describe what you did anyway. The concrete right action, despite the cost.
  • Say whether it was worth it, honestly. Even ambivalence is more credible than a tidy moral.

Bring the evidence

A genuinely real, specifically named personal cost, a concrete right action taken despite it, and an honest reflection on the tradeoff.

What weakens it

I did the right thing even though it wasn't the easiest option.

05 Describe a time you changed how you worked to improve what the group produced. Teamwork Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to Teamwork, specifically framed around adapting your own approach rather than just supporting an existing plan.

Build your answer

  • Name what you changed about your own approach. Not what you asked others to change.
  • Say why the original approach wasn't working. For the group, not just for you personally.
  • State the actual improvement in the output. Concrete, not a vague sense of better collaboration.

Bring the evidence

A specific change to your own approach, a real reason the original wasn't serving the group, and a concrete improvement in the output.

What weakens it

I adjusted my communication style to work better with the team.

06 Tell me about a time you created real conditions for a different perspective to actually shape a decision. Diversity and Inclusion Open guide

Find your angle. Maps to Diversity and Inclusion, specifically testing for an actual changed decision, not just a perspective being heard politely.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual perspective and why it wasn't automatically being heard. Specific, not vague.
  • Describe the concrete step you took. Not a general encouragement to speak up.
  • Say how the decision actually changed. Not just that the discussion felt more inclusive.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named perspective and barrier to it being heard, a concrete step taken to surface it, and a real change to the decision as a result.

What weakens it

I make sure everyone's voice is heard in team discussions.

07 How would you approach answering a question with thirty seconds to think and no chance to redo it? Composure Open guide

Find your angle. Directly relevant to RBC's own recorded interview format. Tests whether the format itself is understood and prepared for.

Build your answer

  • Use the prep window to pick a structure, not draft sentences. There isn't time to script word for word.
  • Lead with the point immediately once recording starts. Given the short window, not building up to it.
  • Accept a slightly imperfect delivery over a frozen pause. A confident, structured answer beats a polished one you never finished.

Bring the evidence

A stated use of the prep window for structure rather than scripting, an immediate lead with the main point, and an explicit preference for finishing over polishing.

What weakens it

I'd try to stay calm and think of a good example quickly.

08 Describe a time you made a mistake and disclosed it before anyone else found it. Ownership Open guide

Find your angle. Tests the standard disclose-first discipline, expected especially heavily in a regulated bank.

Build your answer

  • State the mistake plainly. No minimizing language.
  • Say who you told and when. Before it was discovered by someone else.
  • Describe the fix and the prevention. Two distinct things, not just the immediate correction.

Bring the evidence

An unminimized account of the mistake, proof it reached your manager before anyone else found it, and a durable fix beyond the immediate correction.

What weakens it

I caught it and quietly corrected it before it became a problem.

09 How do you handle receiving critical feedback? Feedback Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether feedback leads to a real behavior change or just a polite acknowledgement.

Build your answer

  • State the feedback plainly. Without softening it.
  • Describe your honest reaction. Even if it stung.
  • Say what you changed. A concrete change, not stated intent.

Bring the evidence

The feedback stated without softening, an honest account of how it landed, and one concrete change made because of it.

What weakens it

I take feedback well and try to act on it.

10 Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision made above you. Conflict Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether disagreement gets raised directly through the right channel or quietly worked around.

Build your answer

  • State the actual disagreement. Specific, not vague.
  • Describe how you raised it. Directly, with reasoning, not behind the decision maker's back.
  • Say what happened. Honestly, whether it changed or you carried it out anyway.

Bring the evidence

The real point of disagreement named specifically, a direct conversation grounded in reasoning, and an honest account of the actual outcome.

What weakens it

I raised my concerns respectfully and then supported the final call.

11 Tell me about a time you had to learn something unfamiliar very quickly. Learning Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether a real gap gets closed with a targeted shortcut under pressure, not general enthusiasm for learning.

Build your answer

  • Name the gap and the actual deadline. Specific and tight.
  • Describe your real shortcut. The highest leverage source, not broad reading.
  • Say how you confirmed you were ready. A real check, not just confidence.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named gap with a real deadline, a targeted shortcut, and a genuine readiness check.

What weakens it

I pick things up quickly, so unfamiliar material doesn't usually slow me down.

12 Why banking specifically, rather than another industry? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Distinguishes a real reason from a default choice made because it's a common path.

Build your answer

  • Give a real, specific reason. Tied to your own history, not an industry cliche about numbers or stability.
  • Acknowledge a genuine tradeoff. What another industry might offer that this doesn't.
  • Say why that tradeoff suits you now. Specific to your current situation.

Bring the evidence

A reason rooted in real personal history, an honestly acknowledged tradeoff, and a stated reason it fits your situation right now.

What weakens it

I've always been interested in finance and how money moves.

13 Tell me about a time you had to prioritize under real time pressure. Prioritization Open guide

Find your angle. A basic operational reality. Tests a real criterion, not just working harder.

Build your answer

  • Name the actual criterion. Real impact or a hard deadline, not gut feeling.
  • Describe how you communicated the tradeoff. To whoever was affected, not decided silently.
  • Give a real example. Concrete, not hypothetical.

Bring the evidence

A ranking rule beyond gut feel, proof the tradeoff was flagged to the people affected, and one concrete case it actually governed.

What weakens it

I stay organized and tackle the most urgent items first.

14 Walk me through how you would investigate a transaction that looks unusual. Investigation Open guide

Find your angle. A core compliance skill. Tests a real method, not a vague promise to look into it.

Build your answer

  • Establish the baseline first. What's normal for this account, before deciding what's abnormal.
  • Trace the specific anomaly. Amount, destination, or timing, named specifically.
  • Document the reasoning, not just the conclusion. So the decision can be reviewed later.

Bring the evidence

A stated baseline for what's normal on that account, the specific anomaly named against it, and the reasoning behind the conclusion written down, not just the verdict.

What weakens it

I'd flag it in the system and let the automated check sort it out.

15 What would you do if a manager asked you to approve something that felt like it skirted a policy? Integrity Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether a compliance judgment holds up specifically against pressure from someone with more authority than you.

Build your answer

  • Say you would not approve it as asked. State the boundary plainly and first.
  • Ask for the actual justification. Give them the chance to explain, rather than assuming bad intent.
  • Escalate if the answer doesn't resolve it. Name the actual channel, like a second line function.

Bring the evidence

A refusal to approve on request alone stated plainly, real engagement with whatever justification is offered, and a named escalation route if that justification doesn't hold up.

What weakens it

I'd go along with it, since they likely know something about the situation I don't.

16 How do you stay current with regulatory changes relevant to your role? Continuous learning Open guide

Find your angle. Regulation shifts constantly. They want an actual habit, not a claim of general diligence.

Build your answer

  • Name a specific source. A regulator's bulletin or internal update, something concrete.
  • Describe how you apply it. Not just reading it, but changing something because of it.
  • Give a real example. A specific change you actually acted on.

Bring the evidence

A named specific source, evidence of applying it rather than just reading it, and one real example.

What weakens it

I make an effort to stay on top of regulatory news as it comes out.

17 Describe a time you had to say no to someone more senior than you. Courage Open guide

Find your angle. Tests whether a real refusal has actually happened under seniority pressure, not just a hypothetical willingness to push back.

Build your answer

  • State what you said no to, specifically. Not a vague disagreement, an actual refusal.
  • Explain how you delivered it. Respectfully, but without softening it into agreement.
  • Describe what happened afterward. Whether it held, and how the relationship continued.

Bring the evidence

One concrete instance of saying no, proof the delivery held firm rather than softening into agreement, and a real account of what happened afterward.

What weakens it

I usually look for middle ground instead of a flat refusal.

18 How would you explain the difference between a control that prevents an error and one that only detects it after the fact? Knowledge Open guide

Find your angle. A basic technical screen for the domain. Tests precision, since the two get conflated by people who haven't actually designed controls.

Build your answer

  • Define a preventive control precisely. Stops the error before it happens, built into the process itself.
  • Define a detective control precisely. Catches it after the fact, through review or reconciliation.
  • Explain why both matter together. A detective control isn't a lesser version of a preventive one, it's a different layer.

Bring the evidence

A precise, distinct definition of each control type, and a clear statement of why both layers matter rather than one being simply worse.

What weakens it

A preventive control stops something and a detective one catches it later.

05 / The five values

What is actually being scored

RBC publishes five values it hires against. Bring a real story for each rather than a general answer about wanting to work at a large, stable bank.

5stories

Client First

A time you chose the harder path because it led to a better outcome for the person you were serving, not the easier one for you.

Accountability

A time you named your own specific contribution to a failure, rather than describing what the team or the situation got wrong.

Integrity

A time doing the right thing came at a real personal cost, not just a mild inconvenience.

Teamwork

A time you changed how you worked to improve what the group produced, not just supported the existing plan.

Diversity and Inclusion

A time you created real conditions for a different perspective to actually shape a decision, not just be heard politely.

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

! Four ways this goes wrong before anyone meets you

The recorded round is the real filter, not the final interview

No interviewer, no retake, thirty seconds to think. Candidates are reported to lose the loop here more than at any live round, treating it as a formality before the real interview is a common and costly mistake.

The two tracks are not interchangeable preparation

A capital markets candidate skips the retail aptitude test entirely and instead faces a Superday with technical valuation and M&A questions in every session. Preparing for one track's process does not prepare you for the other.

Capital markets acceptance is reported to be genuinely low even after the Superday

Reaching the final round is reported to still mean roughly a nineteen in twenty chance of not advancing. Treating a Superday invitation as close to an offer is a real miscalibration.

Accountability is scored on specificity, not humility in general

A vague admission that 'the team could have done better' is reported to score worse than naming your own precise contribution to a failure, even though the second one feels more exposing to say.
