RBC Interview Intelligence

Questions built for your role at RBC, each with a guide to structuring the answer against your own experience.

Most candidates are reported to be eliminated at a recorded interview with no human on the other end: thirty seconds to prepare, then two to three minutes to answer, no retake.

Retail and commercial banking candidates are reported to face this HireVue round after an aptitude test and before ever speaking to a hiring manager. Capital markets candidates face the same recorded format earlier, then a very different real time process: a phone round with junior bankers, then a Superday of four to five back to back thirty minute sessions.

02 / Hiring process

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. Aptitude test is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Online application resume and role fit

Every path starts here. Reported to decide which of the two very different processes below you enter: retail and commercial banking, or capital markets.

02

Aptitude test retail track, verbal and numerical, 3 day window

Reported for retail and commercial banking candidates specifically: verbal and numerical reasoning tests completed within a three day window. Capital markets candidates are reported to skip this and move straight to the recorded interview.

03

Recorded video interview 30 seconds to prepare, no retake

A HireVue style round with no interviewer present, reported across both tracks. Thirty seconds to read the question, then two to three minutes to record an answer, with no option to redo it. Most candidates are reported to be eliminated here.

04

Track specific interview hiring manager, or phone round and Superday

Retail and commercial banking candidates are reported to move to a final interview with the actual hiring manager. Capital markets candidates instead face a forty five to sixty minute phone round with two or three analysts and associates, then a Superday of four to five sequential thirty minute sessions with an MD, a director, a VP and an associate, each reported to mix technical and behavioural questions.

05

Decision background check, then offer

A background check follows a successful final round before a formal offer. Capital markets acceptance is reported to run roughly six to eight percent overall, and under five percent for candidates who reach the Superday itself.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Interview question practice library

The recorded interview and its five values apply whatever role you applied for, so the core set below covers that ground. Each specialist role, and each track, then adds the rounds and technical depth specific to it.

01 Why do you want to work at RBC? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Opens the recorded round for most candidates. A generic answer about wanting a stable career at a big bank says nothing specific about you.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific about RBC. A division, a market, or something concrete, not the brand in general.
  • Connect it to your own history. Why that particular thing matters given what you've actually done.
  • Say what you want to build here. Stated plainly, not a general career goal.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, checkable fact about RBC tied to something real about your own background.

What weakens it

RBC is one of the biggest banks in Canada with great long term stability.

02 Tell me about a time you chose the harder path because it led to a better outcome for the person you were serving. Client First Open guide

Find your angle. Maps directly to RBC's Client First value. Tests a real instance where the easier option for you was genuinely available and declined.

Build your answer

  • State what the easier option would have been. Specific, so the harder choice is visible against it.
  • Describe the actual harder path you took. Concrete, not a general attitude of caring.
  • Say what the outcome actually was for them. Not your own feeling about having done the right thing.

Bring the evidence

A specifically named easier alternative, a concrete harder action taken instead, and a real outcome for the other person.

What weakens it

I always try to put the client's needs ahead of my own convenience.

05 / The five values

What is actually being scored

RBC publishes five values it hires against. Bring a real story for each rather than a general answer about wanting to work at a large, stable bank.

5stories

Client First

A time you chose the harder path because it led to a better outcome for the person you were serving, not the easier one for you.

Accountability

A time you named your own specific contribution to a failure, rather than describing what the team or the situation got wrong.

Integrity

A time doing the right thing came at a real personal cost, not just a mild inconvenience.

Teamwork

A time you changed how you worked to improve what the group produced, not just supported the existing plan.

Diversity and Inclusion

A time you created real conditions for a different perspective to actually shape a decision, not just be heard politely.

06 / Before you apply

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

  • The assessment answers that read as dishonest rather than confident
  • What the availability question is really deciding
  • The application detail that cannot be edited once submitted
