Online application we hire people, not resumes
Shopify states its philosophy directly: candidates are screened for demonstrated skills and real-world impact rather than credentials or pedigree. Reported response time from application to a recruiter call is two to four weeks.

Recruiter screen 15 to 30 minutes
A call covering background, role alignment, compensation and availability. Reported as a genuine two way conversation, where candidates who ask specific questions about the team and product area are noted to move forward faster than those who treat it as a formality.

Craft assessment and technical rounds 60 to 90 minutes each, for technical roles
The most demanding phase for engineering roles, reported to include at least three distinct sessions: a live coding exercise in an online editor with real time feedback, a pair programming session solving a problem with a Shopify developer, and a technical deep dive discussing one or two past projects, the architecture decisions and tradeoffs behind them.

The Life Story interview your full career narrative
Shopify's own most distinctive stage. Candidates narrate their full career journey from early interests through major decisions, and the interviewer listens for patterns in motivation, values, and how the candidate handles adversity, rather than scoring individual achievements.

Behavioural interview STAR format, values alignment
One or more rounds with hiring managers or team members probing teamwork, conflict resolution, ownership and alignment with Shopify's stated values. Given Shopify's remote-first culture, examples of asynchronous collaboration and self-direction are reported to carry particular weight.

Final team meet and decision virtual or in person
A final stage meeting team members and stakeholders, virtual for most candidates or in person for those local to a Shopify Port.
