Target Interview Intelligence

Questions built around Target's live vacancy mix, from guest service and store leadership to technology, supply chain and merchandising. The interview format changes by role, but Target publishes exactly what its recorded video stage expects.

Target lets recorded video candidates re-record each answer, but it does not allow a second interview after submission.

Target says the recorded interview takes about 30 minutes. A recruiter or hiring manager sees only the final recording for each question and usually responds within five business days. Once the complete interview is submitted, there is no retake.

02 / Hiring process

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. Recorded video interview is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Workday application resume, availability and role fit

Every application is submitted through Workday. Target may ask for availability, supplemental information or a short job skills assessment. The posting's schedule and requirements matter as much as the resume for many store roles.

02

Recruiting review application review or recruiter contact

Target's recruiting team reviews the application and may contact the candidate to discuss the company, role and team. Some candidates receive only email instructions before the next stage, so the path is not identical for every location.

03

Recorded video interview about 30 minutes, final clips only

Many store candidates answer a series of HireVue questions. Target allows a re-record before each response is submitted and sees only the final clip. The full interview cannot be retaken after submission. Target recommends answers of about five minutes in its interview guide.

04

Live interview phone, virtual or in person

Target uses phone, virtual and in person interviews depending on the position and location. Aggregated candidate accounts describe store leader, recruiter, hiring manager and team conversations, but Target does not publish one universal sequence.

05

Offer and Target Welcome screening, documents and orientation

Offers arrive through Workday or through a recruiter. Candidates acknowledge the terms and complete pre-hire screening and documents in the Candidate Homepage. Target Welcome then covers expectations, values and team integration.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Interview question practice library

The core questions follow Target's published interview guide and recorded video format. Each specialist role adds decisions grounded in its real live vacancy area.

01 Why do you want to work at Target and in this role? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Target is testing whether you can connect one current Target fact to the work you want to do. The useful answer makes the decision visible and ties it to Target's real operating context.

Build your answer

  • Set the context. Describe when you chose this opening over another large retailer. Name the people, pressure and boundary without adding unrelated history.
  • Show the decision. Explain how you would connect one current Target fact to the work you want to do. State the option you rejected and why.
  • Close with proof. Use a current Target programme, store visit or job requirement tied to your own history. Finish with the result, safeguard or next check.

Bring the evidence

A current Target programme, store visit or job requirement tied to your own history.

What weakens it

When you chose this opening over another large retailer, a weak answer gives a smooth principle but never shows the actual decision.

05 / The three values

What is actually being scored

Target publishes three culture values in this exact language. Prepare one story for each and make the effect on a guest, teammate or decision visible.

3stories

Care

A time you put a guest or teammate first through a concrete action, especially when the easier response would have protected only your own task.

Grow

A time you learned from feedback, developed another person or changed a working method after new evidence showed a better way.

Win

A time you did the right thing, improved the result and succeeded with other people rather than claiming the outcome as individual effort.

06 / Before you apply

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

  • The assessment answers that read as dishonest rather than confident
  • What the availability question is really deciding
  • The application detail that cannot be edited once submitted
