Walmart Interview Intelligence

The questions candidates report being asked for your role, each with a guide to finding the answer in your own experience.

Most candidates are cut before a human reads a word.

The assessment sits second, runs automatically, and every scenario maps to one of four published values.

4

Bring one story for each

Built from Walmart’s own hiring materials and common patterns for the role. Not affiliated with Walmart.

02 / Hiring process

Five stages, and one of them decides it

5 stages from application to offer. The assessment is reported to be the one that decides it.

5stages

01

Application 20 to 25 minutes

No CV needed for hourly roles, but your full job history is. It cannot be edited once submitted, and the availability you state quietly decides which openings you are matched against.

02

The assessment situational judgement

You are asked what you would be most and least likely to do. Every scenario maps to one of the four values, so the answer being marked is the one the value would give, not the fastest operational fix.

03

Recorded interview timed, no interviewer

Usually one retake and nobody to read for reaction. Land the result inside thirty seconds, then support it.

04

Hiring manager panel for management

Structured and behavioural. For hourly roles the store manager or people lead works from one list whatever you applied for.

05

Decision background check first

Looking for honesty rather than a clean record. A conviction is not an automatic bar. A gap between what you declared and what the check finds usually is.

Ask before the interview: what will this round cover, who will I meet, and is there anything I should prepare? The question almost nobody asks

03 / Question library

Interview question practice library

Pick your role. The core questions stay, because the store manager works from one list whatever you applied for, and the role specific ones are added.

Asked in every interviewAsked in every Walmart interview
01 Why do you want to work at Walmart? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. Opens nearly every hourly interview. Scale and stability are true of every large employer and say nothing about you.

Build your answer

  • Name something specific. A store, a recent opening, a programme, something from this month rather than a general impression.
  • Connect it to your history. Why that particular thing matters given what you have actually done.
  • Say what you want from the role. Not what you offer. What you hope to learn or build.

Bring the evidence

One concrete, recent, checkable fact about Walmart tied to something real about you.

What weakens it

They are a big company with good opportunities. True of two hundred employers.

02 Why should we hire you over other candidates? Motivation Open guide

Find your angle. They are not asking you to rank yourself. They are asking which of their problems you solve.

Build your answer

  • Pick their problem. Coverage, turnover, peak trading, service scores. Name the one you fit.
  • Give the evidence. One example where you solved that exact thing.
  • Be specific about availability. At hourly level this is often the real differentiator and candidates skip it.

Bring the evidence

A named problem, one proof, and a concrete commitment about hours.

What weakens it

Listing adjectives. Hard working and reliable are claims, not evidence.

03 Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer. Customer service Open guide

Find your angle. Serve our customers. They listen for a moment where helping cost you something: your break, your task list, your own targets.

Build your answer

  • Set the scene. One customer, one problem, one constraint. Keep the context brief.
  • Explain your judgement. What you asked, the options you weighed, the action you personally took.
  • Close with evidence. How you knew it was resolved, and what you would repeat.

Bring the evidence

The original need, your specific action, and an observable outcome.

What weakens it

Saying you always put customers first without an incident, or treating a policy breach as service.

04 How would you handle an angry customer when you are already busy? Customer service Open guide

Find your angle. Very common, because it is the daily reality of the job. They want the order: person first, task second.

Build your answer

  • Acknowledge before explaining. The explanation only lands once they feel heard. Reversing it escalates.
  • Say what you do with the queue. Naming how you handle the people waiting is what separates a strong answer.
  • Offer something real. A substitute, a hold, a colleague, a time you will come back.

Bring the evidence

A sequence starting with acknowledgement, a plan for the queue, and a concrete offer.

What weakens it

Ignoring the other customers. The question is really about doing both.

05 Describe a time you worked with a team to keep things running smoothly. Working with others Open guide

Find your angle. Stocking crews and front ends live or die on this. They want your specific contribution, not the team's story.

Build your answer

  • Say what the shared goal was. A truck, a peak hour, a stocktake. Something with a clock on it.
  • Name your part precisely. What you did that nobody else was doing.
  • Say how you helped someone else. The half most candidates omit, and the half being scored.

Bring the evidence

A shared objective, your distinct contribution, and one moment you supported a colleague.

What weakens it

We worked well as a team. It contains no information about you.

06 Describe a situation where you had to handle a difficult team member. Working with others Open guide

Find your angle. Difficult team member is bait. Strong answers quietly reframe it as a behaviour with a reason behind it.

Build your answer

  • Describe behaviour, not personality. The specific thing and its effect on the work.
  • Go direct and private first. Escalating as a first move fails this question.
  • Say what you found. There is usually a reason, and finding it is the point.

Bring the evidence

A concrete impact, an agreed change, and what you observed afterwards.

What weakens it

Diagnosing character, or claiming one conversation fixed everything.

07 Tell me about a time you made a mistake and how you handled it. Integrity Open guide

Find your angle. The mistake matters far less than the gap between making it and telling someone.

Build your answer

  • Pick one with a consequence. Money, time, or a person affected. A disguised strength reads as evasion.
  • Say who you told, and when. Same day beats next week. Volunteering beats being asked.
  • Contain, then change. What limited the damage, then the control that stopped it recurring.

Bring the evidence

The scale of the error, the disclosure timeline, and a change that outlasted it.

What weakens it

Caring too much about detail, or a mistake with nothing at stake.

08 What would you do if you saw a colleague taking something without paying? Integrity Open guide

Find your angle. Reported often, and deliberately uncomfortable. Shrink is a real cost and integrity is a stated value.

Build your answer

  • Do not investigate. Say plainly you would not confront or gather evidence yourself.
  • Report it through the proper route. Name it: your manager, or the ethics line. Certainty is what they want to hear.
  • Do not moralise about it. A short, clear answer is stronger than a long justification.

Bring the evidence

An unambiguous answer, a named reporting route, and no hedging.

What weakens it

I would talk to them first. It sounds kind and it fails the question.

09 How do you handle working in a fast paced environment? Situational Open guide

Find your angle. Asked in nearly every hourly interview. They want a method, not enthusiasm.

Build your answer

  • Give your triage rule. Safety, then customers, then time bound, then the rest. Say it as a rule.
  • Show it working. One shift where you applied it.
  • Say what you let go. Someone who saves everything has never been genuinely short.

Bring the evidence

A named principle applied to a real day, with an explicit sacrifice.

What weakens it

I thrive under pressure. It answers nothing.

10 Tell me about a time you had to complete several different tasks at once. Situational Open guide

Find your angle. A softer version of the pressure question, aimed at whether you sequence or scatter.

Build your answer

  • List what was competing. Two or three things, with why each mattered.
  • Give the order and the reason. The reasoning is what is being scored, not the outcome.
  • Say who you told. Communication about what would be late is half the answer.

Bring the evidence

A clear sequence, a stated reason, and the conversation about the delay.

What weakens it

Describing busyness without a decision in it.

11 What is your availability, including nights, weekends and holidays? Availability Open guide

Find your angle. Not small talk. Stores hire against specific gaps in a rota, and this answer decides which openings you are matched to.

Build your answer

  • Be precise and honest. Vague answers get read as narrow. Give actual days and hours.
  • Say what is genuinely fixed. A class, childcare, another job. Naming it is better than hedging.
  • Confirm peak periods. Explicitly address weekends, evenings and the November to January peak.

Bring the evidence

Specific days and hours, honestly stated, with peak availability addressed directly.

What weakens it

Saying you are flexible when you are not. It surfaces at the first schedule.

12 Give an example of when you identified a process improvement at work. Excellence Open guide

Find your angle. Whether you notice things nobody asked you to notice, and whether the change survived you.

Build your answer

  • Start with the irritation. What was wrong and who it affected. Small and specific is fine.
  • Show how you got agreement. Who had to say yes, and how you persuaded them.
  • Say what it was worth. Minutes, dollars, errors avoided, and whether it lasted.

Bring the evidence

A before and after figure, and evidence the change outlasted you.

What weakens it

An improvement that was assigned to you. The question is what you spotted.

13 How do you ensure accuracy when filling prescriptions? Accuracy Open guide

Find your angle. Pharmacy technician roles. Accuracy is not a preference here, it is the entire job.

Build your answer

  • Name the verification steps. Barcode, name and date of birth, drug and strength, the pharmacist check.
  • Say what you do when interrupted. Restart the check rather than resuming it.
  • Say what you do when unsure. Ask. Every time. Say it plainly.

Bring the evidence

A specific multi step check, an interruption protocol, and an unambiguous escalation rule.

What weakens it

Any suggestion you would guess or proceed while unsure.

14 How would you handle a customer asking about someone else's prescription? Confidentiality Open guide

Find your angle. Privacy is regulated. There is one correct answer and they need to hear it immediately.

Build your answer

  • Decline clearly. Without apology or hesitation.
  • Explain briefly and kindly. One sentence about privacy, not a lecture.
  • Offer what you can. Direct them to the patient or the pharmacist.

Bring the evidence

An immediate refusal, a brief explanation, and a helpful redirect.

What weakens it

Checking with a colleague first in front of the customer.

15 A patient is upset about a wait time. What do you do? Service Open guide

Find your angle. Pharmacy queues are emotionally loaded because people are unwell.

Build your answer

  • Acknowledge the wait specifically. Not a generic apology. The actual wait.
  • Give a real timeframe. Or say you will find out and come back.
  • Offer an alternative if there is one. Another store, a transfer, a callback.

Bring the evidence

A specific acknowledgement, an honest timeframe, and a concrete alternative.

What weakens it

Explaining how busy you are. It is true and it makes it worse.

16 How do you work with the pharmacist when you disagree? Teamwork Open guide

Find your angle. Scope of practice matters. They want to see you raise concerns without overstepping.

Build your answer

  • Raise it as a question, not a challenge. I want to check something rather than that is wrong.
  • Be specific about what you saw. The detail, not the conclusion.
  • Accept the decision and log it. The pharmacist owns the call.

Bring the evidence

A concern raised clearly, a specific observation, and respect for the scope boundary.

What weakens it

Either staying quiet or overriding. Both fail.

17 How do you stay accurate when the queue is long? Pressure Open guide

Find your angle. The central tension of the role. Speed can never win here and they need to hear that.

Build your answer

  • Say the rule out loud. The check does not shorten because the queue is long.
  • Manage the queue separately. Communicate the wait rather than rushing the work.
  • Say when you would ask for help. Rather than absorbing it.

Bring the evidence

An explicit refusal to trade accuracy for speed, plus queue management.

What weakens it

Any hint that you would speed up the checking.

What is actually being scored

Walmart publishes what it hires against. Prepare one story for each and you have covered most of what you will be asked.

4stories

Respect the individual

How you treated someone when it would have been easier not to.

Act with integrity

What the background check is really testing. Owning something nobody would have traced to you.

Serve our customers

Strive for excellence

Where candidates lose it

Pro Where candidates lose this before anyone meets them

The part of the process that eliminates most people is not the interview. It is what happens around it, and almost none of it is written down anywhere.

  • The assessment answers that read as dishonest rather than confident
  • What the availability question is really deciding
  • The application detail that cannot be edited once submitted

! Four ways this goes wrong before anyone meets you

The assessment is not a formality

The largest elimination point in the process, running before any human is involved. Answer as yourself rather than as the values and there is no second chance, and no feedback explaining why.

Availability is a filter

Stores hire against specific holes in a rota. Narrow availability quietly removes you from roles you would otherwise get, and nobody tells you that is what happened.

Reapplying has rules

Hourly applications stay on file sixty days and are still being matched, so applying again immediately achieves nothing. Corporate has no cooling off period.

Use the internal route

Current associates apply through OneWalmart. Applying externally as an employee puts you in the wrong queue.
